Achieve More Elegant Body Contours
Certain areas of the body are more prone than others to be affected by fat deposits that linger in spite of diligent exercise and dietary practices. People may work for months or even years to eliminate fat from the abdomen, thighs, or elsewhere without achieving satisfactory results. For people such as these, board-certified plastic surgeon A.M. Yenikomshian offers the opportunity to restore their figures through surgical body contouring. Liposuction, available at our San Jose plastic surgery practice, serving Los Gatos and other Bay Area communities, is a powerful solution to the problem of stubborn pockets of body fat. Though liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, it is ideal for sculpting and toning the body through the removal of small, concentrated amounts of fat.
If you are frustrated by isolated deposits of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise, we invite you to find out whether you could benefit from liposuction by meeting with Dr. Yenikomshian for a confidential consultation at his state-of-the-art plastic surgery practice.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is the precise surgical removal of small amounts of fatty tissue from targeted areas of the body. It is a body contouring procedure, meaning that the goal of liposuction is to sculpt the body in order to create a more pleasing shape. Liposuction can be used to improve muscle definition in the abdominal area, tone the thighs and arms, and reveal the true shape of the body.
Candidates for Liposuction
For the right individual, liposuction is very powerful, indeed. It is important, first and foremost, to have realistic expectations for body contouring. Liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite or stretch marks, nor is it an appropriate weight loss strategy. The ideal candidate for liposuction body contouring with Dr. Yenikomshian is a person who is in good health and within 25 pounds of his or her ideal body weight, but who is bothered by persistent fat deposits that have not responded to dieting or exercise. In addition, liposuction is often incorporated into other procedures, including breast lift, breast reduction, and abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery. It is also commonly combined with breast augmentation as part of a comprehensive cosmetic makeover plan.
Chronic ailments such as immune deficiencies, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure usually make liposuction a poor choice. Additionally, blood-thinning medications must be discontinued before undergoing the surgery. This body contouring procedure is not an option for those allergic to lidocaine anesthesia.
The Liposuction Procedure
The administration of anesthesia is the first step in liposuction. Dr. Yenikomshian can perform the surgery while the patient is under local or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s individual case.
Once anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Yenikomshian makes small, discreet incisions. Through these incisions, the doctor inserts a surgical vacuum tube known as a cannula, which he uses to break up and remove fat deposits. After the fat is removed, he closes the incisions to complete the surgery.
As with any surgery, liposuction involves a recovery period. Dr. Yenikomshian’s patients should plan to take a week off from work. Patients will need to wear a compression bandage for a few weeks after surgery to reduce swelling and bruising. After the first few weeks, these symptoms will fade significantly, but it may take a few months for them to disappear entirely. It will also take several months for the skin to adjust and tighten in order to reveal the full effect of the procedure.
